Jobs and the Economy

More and better jobs for Michigan’s hardworking families remains my top priority. Michigan has come a long ways since the “lost decade.” Over 420,000 private sector jobs have been created; our individual income growth is one of the best in the country, and for the first time in over a decade Michigan’s unemployment rate is below the national average.

A healthy economy also means creating opportunities for all Michiganders, especially for our veterans and for those who choose to pursue skilled trades. I was proud to support legislation that allows our veterans to use the valuable training they obtained during their service to our country. I also co-sponsored legislation that increases skill trade opportunities for students that choose to pursue great careers with high demand, such as welding and agricultural sciences.

A lot has been accomplished in the past six years. However, good is never good enough for Michigan’s hardworking families, and we still have work to do. As your state representative, I will continue to work to keep taxes low and remove excessive regulations so that our economy can continue to thrive.

I am proud to have been supported by the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Business, and the Small Business Association of Michigan.

Fiscal Responsibility

Government must be responsible and accountable with every taxpayer dollar. I have worked diligently with my colleagues to pass a sound and balanced budget four months ahead of schedule that invests in important areas such as education, public safety and infrastructure. We have also paid down significant amounts of long-term debt that has hindered our state for years. Our state’s rainy day fund has also been replenished, causing our bond rating to increase, and ensuring that our state is prepared in times of crisis.
Fighting Crime

I firmly believe government’s most essential duty is the protection of its citizens. As a former prosecutor in one of Michigan’s most dangerous cities, I have seen first-hand the impact crime can have on a local community.

Since taking office, I have been a strong advocate for public safety and victims' rights, especially for our state's most vulnerable - children, the elderly and the handicapped. My first bill increased penalties against those that embezzle funds from vulnerable adults. Other legislation has included protections for victims and families entitled to restitution and increased penalties against those who solicit or abuse children.

I have also worked with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to combat one of the state’s most heinous crimes – human trafficking.

Defending Life

Over the past four years I have maintained a 100% pro-life voting record in the state legislature, and have been endorsed by Michigan Right to Life in each of my elections.

During my first term, I was proud to co-sponsor legislation to make it a crime for any person to coerce a woman into having an abortion.

2nd Amendment

As a CPL holder and a Life member of the NRA, I understand the importance of preserving the right to keep and bear arms. In my four years, I have maintained an A+ rating with the Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners (“MCRGO”-PAC), and an “A” rating from the NRA.

I was proud to co-sponsor legislation my first term that protects law abiding citizens' CPL information from FOIA.

Agriculture

With agriculture being Michigan’s second largest industry, farmers play a significant role in our state’s economy. Farmers are some of the best conservationists in our society and their very livelihood depends on the land which they manage.

I have maintained a 100% voting record with Michigan’s Farm Bureau.

During my first term, I was proud to co-sponsor legislation to give our students, parents and schools more flexibility in education so that more vocational programs can be offered to our youth. As agriculture becomes a $100 billion industry in Michigan, more skilled labor will be crucial for our state. I’m proud to work with my colleagues to make vocational programs in schools a reality.

Senior Citizens

Elder abuse is becoming a growing concern. During my time as a prosecutor, I worked closely with the Genesee County Elder Abuse Task Force on some of the most egregious elder abuse cases. Today, I am proud to be a top advocate in the legislature for our senior citizens.

The first bill I introduced increased penalties against those that embezzle funds from vulnerable adults. I also introduced legislation that ensures that restitution owed to victims will be paid to their families in the tragic event the victim passes away before their restitution is paid. Each of these bills are now law.

Government’s top priority is the protection of its people; especially our most vulnerable. I will continue to be their voice in the legislature.
